A Direct support Professional (DSP) is a skilled professional who helps people with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD) participate in their communities. DSPs help people become independent and integrated into their community by : Providing emotional support, Helping people learn how to do things for themselves, and Accessing resources to keep people safe.

DSPs are part of the Direct Care Workers (DCWs) workforce, and there is a nationwide shortage of DCWs. DSPs are an important part of the economy and workforce, and a well-trained and fairly compensated DSP workforce is essential.
